Itinerary

Arrive at Leh, nestled at over 3,500 meters, where the crisp mountain air greets you warmly. After checking into your hotel, take the afternoon at leisure to acclimatise. Later, enjoy a gentle stroll to Namgyal Tsemo Gompa, sitting majestically above Leh, offering panoramic views of the town and the Shanti Stupa. Take a moment to enjoy tea with this first whisper of Ladakh’s spiritual ambiance. Overnight in Leh.

Today, journey westward through the Indus Valley, visiting monasteries dotted along quiet villages. Begin at Phyang Gompa, perched on a cliff. Continue to Likir Monastery, home to a large Maitreya Buddha statue, then onward to Alchi Monastery, among the oldest in Ladakh with exquisite Indo-Tibetan murals. Finally, visit Rizong Gompa, remote and serene, offering solitude and prayer. Return to Leh by evening.

Depart for Lamayuru Monastery, known as the “moonland” temple due to its lunar-like surroundings. Explore its ancient murals and cliffside location. Proceed to Basgo, a former royal capital whose gompa commands an impressive ridge. Return to Leh in the evening, savouring these timeless views.

Travel east into the Indus Valley. First, stop at Chemrey Monastery, founded in the 17th century, known for its Padmasambhava statue and annual sacred dance festival Next, visit the largest and wealthiest monastery and Hemis, famed for its vibrant masked dance festival and trove of thangkas Finally, climb to Thiksey Monastery, reminiscent of Tibet’s Potala Palace, housing a colossal Maitreya Buddha statue
Return to Leh at sunset.

Venture off the main path this morning with visits to Ladakh’s quieter gompas. Begin with Saboo Gompa, then drive to Takthok Monastery, carved into the mountainside and built over a cave where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have meditated.
